Now then! My name’s Rich Sutherland and I’m running the marketing for Omni-Science. I had the pleasure of collaborating with Brick by Brick during the original run of this show back in 2017, and I’m proper chuffed to see it return as an even bigger, brighter and bolder adventure with more funky tech than you can shake a Sonic Screwdriver at. Marketing is very much my bread and butter, as I’m the Managing Director of a local creative agency called sobananapenguin. We take on all types of clients but arts and theatre companies are my personal fave, having worked at Hull Truck Theatre both full-time and freelance for the past decade. Over the years I’ve also delivered marketing services for Silent Uproar, The Roaring Girls, The Herd, NAPA, The John Godber Company and Assemble Fest, so I’m no stranger to the wacky world of indie theatre and all that it entails. This show is especially exciting for me as I’m also a bit of a digital geek. My family were early adopters of computers and during my lifetime I’ve been the proud owner of defunct classics such as a Betamax top loader, a Tamagotchi, a pager, a Nokia 3310 and a MiniDisc player. These days my work-life balance would totally topple over if it wasn’t for my smartphone (I put everything from meetings to haircuts in my Google Calendar) and most of my home is voice-controlled, including the lights, music, thermostat, even the kettle. Basically if Alexa ever becomes sentient, she’ll be able to plunge my house into a chilly, tune-free gloom where cups of tea have to be served cold. For me, Omni-Science is a show that needs to be seen because it celebrates the wonders of modern technology whilst wrapped up in a totally bodacious ‘80s package. And yet even with all of the clever gadgets and digital integration, it’s still a silly, funny, feel-good experience that’s perfect for kids and grown-ups alike. I feel very lucky being involved and honestly can’t wait to see the audience reactions when it’s performed in the Fruit Market. My only regret is that I’m far too large to try on the Omni suit, but we can’t have everything eh? See you at the show! Rich Favourite gadget: Being 6’4”, most people can see up my nose, so I’d have to say my nifty little nasal trimmers Most used app: I’d like to say Peak (a brain training game) but it’s probably Instagram or Twitter Best ‘80s track: 'Mad World' by Tears for Fears. What an absolute classic. Omni-Science runs at the Fruit Market in Hull on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st September 2019. Book your tickets.
