Hello. I’m Joe Hakim. I’m a writer and broadcaster and I live and work in Hull. I’ve been trying to scrape by as a freelance creative-type for a few years now. I’ve worked a lot in spoken word and performance poetry, and I’ve also dabbled in theatre and prose. My role on Omni-Science is that of writer and dramaturg. And as the token old git with an ‘80s childhood, I’ve become the dealer of all that is retro ‘80s aesthetic. Just so you know, I found typing that sentence to be really depressing. Bloody retro. Pass my pipe and slippers. I’m just really excited to be collaborating with Brick by Brick again. We have a lot of fun, but we do it while getting a lot of stuff done. There are a lot of ideas whizzing about, which is great. I’ve just recently completed a novel, so it’s just great to be in a room working with other people. And robots. Favourite gadget Currently, my favourite gadget is a digital voice recorder. I know a lot of people use their phones for things like that now, but it’s a solid, chunky object built with one function in mind, and it’s very good at its job. It’s joined my notebook on the list of things I can’t leave the house without. Most used app This is really boring, but it has to be YouTube. It’s a great resource, and it allows me to pursue these little obsessions I get from time to time. When I was working on my book, I would spend a shocking amount of time watching wobbly hand-cam footage of UFOs and things creeping about in forests. I’ve recently had an exotic food phase, and I’m currently watching vids about off-the-grid living, people using reclaimed materials to construct houses in the middle of nowhere. I’ll never do it myself of course; watching the aforementioned vids of weird stuff happening in the wilderness has seen to that. Best '80s track ‘I Can’t Go For That (No Can Do)’ by Hall and Oates. And if you can’t go for that, I… don’t know what I can say, really. Everyone has their own taste in music I suppose. Stay for the sax solo. Omni-Science runs at the Fruit Market in Hull on Friday 20th and Saturday 21st September 2019. Book your tickets.
