We are really excited to officially announce another member of the team for our show ‘Omni-Science’ performed as part of Assemble Fest this year. His name is Joe Hakim and, as we are sure you will agree, his photo proves that he is cooler than we could ever hope to be. Joe is joining as us writer and dramaturg for the show, making sure that our collection of crazy ideas come together to create a fantastic audience experience.
As a performance poet, Joe has performed at venues and festivals around the UK, including Latitude, Big Chill and Edinburgh Fringe Festival. He was co-host and organiser of Write to Speak, a series of spoken word events and workshops that took in place at Hull Truck Theatre from 2009 to 2013. In 2016 he toured and performed with LIFE, a Hull-based punk four-piece band, performing on the UK leg of the Slaves European tour. In January 2017 he travelled to Trinidad with The Roundhouse and Wrecking Ball Press as part of the Talking Doorsteps project, assisting in the delivery of workshops and helping to forge international links between spoken word organisations and projects. In addition to this, he is currently in the first year of a part-time MA in Creative Writing at Hull University, and works three days a week as a pawn-broker/Western Union agent. Joe has also recently been selected to write a short play about Hull as part of Paines Plough’s COME TO WHERE I’M FROM in association with Hull Truck Grow Festival this May. Look out for that! We asked Joe what appealed to him about being part of this show: "As a fan of transrealist sci-fi - which includes work by the likes of Kurt Vonnegut and Philip K Dick - I was immediately intrigued by the concept of the show. I was also really interested in the process by which Brick by Brick develops their work, an approach that's completely different to anything I've done before. This means that I've had to move out of my comfort zone and embrace a whole new way of working, something I am always keen to do. Because theatre is such a collaborative medium, I'm really looking forward to getting out of my writing room, working as part of a team and watching the ideas develop, and all the twists and turns that await us on the journey to producing this show as part of Assemblefest. And I'm also looking forward to making the audience freak-out!" We are really excited to work with Joe on this show and absolutely cannot wait to present the our brand new show to you all on June 3rd. Tickets are available here. Go on, you know you want to! Thanks for reading, Jack Chamberlain
